When shopping for bedsheets, you may come across numbers like 300 TC, 600 TC, or 1200 TC. But what does thread count actually mean? And does a higher thread count always mean better bedding?
The answer isn’t simply about choosing the biggest number.
What Is Thread Count?
Thread count (TC) refers to the number of threads woven into a specific area of fabric. It is one way to describe the construction of a fabric.
It is also important to know that thread count can be measured using different systems. For example:
300 TC — Imperial System
1200 TC — Metric System
So, a 1200 TC label does not necessarily mean four times the quality of a 300 TC fabric.
Does A Higher Thread Count Mean Better Quality?
Not necessarily.
Thread count is only one part of the fabric. The quality of the fibre, yarn, weave, and finishing all contribute to how bedding feels and performs.
A higher thread count does not automatically mean softer, more breathable, or more luxurious bedding.
